Why should we start this soil expedition with looking at God’s Word? I think we don’t really understand how blessed and privileged we are to hold God’s eternal Word in our hands, be it on paper or in many different digital formats. We allow ourselves the luxury to choose our favorite translations while still so many people on earth don’t even have one single Bible translation in their tribal or native language.

Tragically, Wycliffe Bible translators had to be taken out of many places in recent years because their lives were in such acute danger that the ministry could no longer shoulder the responsibility and ordered them to come back home.

Why is the Bible so important? Why is there so much hatred against the Bible? Why does satan hate it so much that he does his best to forbid, destroy, discredit or twist God’s Word? Why do individuals and even national leaders consider it their life mission to wipe out even the slightest sign of faith in Bible Scriptures? And why is the Bible so precious to believers that thousands risked their lives for example in communist China, secretly copying page by page under candle light and distributing their products like the most precious treasure?

What is it that makes God’s Word, the Bible, so super special? Let us study.

Saying Soil

The Words of Jesus in Mark 11:22 could also be translated as “Have the faith of God”. The faith of God speaks… speaks… speaks… and gets results. If you root and ground your life in God's Word, your heart and your spirit will be filled with God’s Words, which are always faith Words, positive Words, life-giving Words.

As God’s Word clearly tells us, we WILL eat the fruit of our lips:

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit (Pr.18:21)

Words have creative power. Please do understand - this is and always will be God’s eternal design. Your Lord Jesus said it very strongly and clearly:

34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.
36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgement.
37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned (Mt.12:34-37)

Wow!!! Words have such an unimaginable importance for your life, both for this life and for the life to come! Being condemned… being justified… these are not easy words for Jesus to say. I really pray we all may once and for all comprehend in our spirit the tremendous power our God has placed into our tongue, that little member that boasts great things (Jas.3:5).

Providing this precious soil for your life didn’t come without a high price to God. To produce this soil for you to grow deep roots, He had to send His one and only Son, His Living Word, into a human body. This Word-seed Jesus had to grow within Mary’s womb, be born of a virgin, walk this earth as a normal human being and then offer up His life as God’s ultimate sacrifice for all humanity and for all eternity.

Hear our Lord Jesus explain to His disciples the way to access life and even eternal life:

53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.
54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
55 For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed.
56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.
57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me.
58 This is the bread which came down from heaven - not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever” (Jn.6:53-58)

Wow! Did you know that in ancient Rome, Christians were heavily persecuted because people spread the rumor that they were cannibals, killing and eating humans? What a total misunderstanding!

Of course, your Lord Jesus was talking about His eternal sacrifice, remembered each time you take Holy Communion. Remember, Jesus is the Word of God made flesh (Jn.1:1,14). So eating His flesh simply means eating Him, God’s eternal Word, and even eating God’s written Word.

This is God’s glorious Sacrifice-Soil that makes you free from sin, sickness, death and devil. Root and ground your life in God’s Word, eat it, drink it, breathe it, metabolize it, and live forever in His Presence.

Searching Soil

God’s Word does even more than that - it also discerns the thoughts and intentions of our hearts. No human being can really understand our deepest intentions. God's Word gives us a very strong warning:

9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? (Jer.17:9)

Of course, in New Testament times, this dilemma has been solved because God’s promise spoken through His prophet Ezekiel became reality:

19 Then I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them, and take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh,
20 that they may walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God (Eze.11:19-20)

As a new creation in Christ Jesus, you have received that new heart and that new spirit!

I used to pray according to King David’s wise prayer in Psalm 139:23-24, “Lord, please check my heart, check my motivations!” Try that. It is a very eye-opening experience. You might find out that you actually do things more for people’s sake or to satisfy your own conscience than for God and His Kingdom. If that should be the case, don’t worry and don’t feel condemned. You can just repent and ask the Lord to change your heart. You can make King David’s beautiful prayer your own:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my anxieties;
24 and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting (Ps.139:23-24)

How does God search your heart? He already knows everything about you, even the many things you don’t know about yourself! Remember how your Lord Jesus lived His life? As the Creator of humanity, of course He has “root access” to everything inside His creations. So what lifestyle did He live as a result of this knowledge? See here:

24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men,
25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man (Jn.2:24-25)

I had a beautiful experience with this reality many years ago during my God-ordained training period in Argentina. Through some squeezing incidences and God’s response through His Word, I had discovered some ungodly attitude in my heart. I had never even known that such a selfish, ugly thought pattern had been hiding in my life all these years. Very dismayed, I did what I always do: I RAN to Jesus! “Jeeeeesuuuus!!! Look what I found in my heart! What an ugly thing! Are You sure You can still love me with such a horrible attitude in my heart?” To my great comfort, my desperate cry received an immediate response. In my spirit, I could see His loving, soothing smile as I heard Him say, “This is nothing new to Me. I have known it all your life, but still, this has never stopped Me from loving you.” Wow!!! What a God!!! What a wonderful Savior! Truly, He knows all men and women, but still He loves us with an everlasting love and draws us toward Him with His loving kindness (Ac.1:24; 15:8; Jer.31:3).

Okay. So we know that God knows our heart, but still, King David asked Him to know his heart. Why? Well, this wise man after God's own heart wanted to make sure he lived a God-pleasing life, and he knew he couldn’t really fathom the depth of his own heart. So he trustingly asked his beloved God to do it for him.

Now, God already knows your heart. He doesn’t need to search it. He only needs to show it to you so you can make the necessary attitude changes to be more like Jesus. How does He do that? He does it by putting His Word before your eyes so you can put it into your heart and avoid sinning against God:

9 How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your Word.
10 With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!
11 Your Word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You (Ps.119:9-11)

Truly, God’s Word is God’s heart-Searching Soil. Stay rooted in it and know your heart stays at par with God’s pure, holy heart.
